The power to choose

I’m at a meeting at NNYLN listening to Rob Karen from WALDO talk, and he explained that WALDO now has access to sell us a database that was previously sole-source.  A colleague from across town asked, “So, if the price is comparable from either vendor, why should we choose you?”

Rob’s answer is one I’m going to remember as I think about this information industry we’re in:  “That’s up to you, because now you have a choice, and you can make up your own mind.”  Because WALDO went after this contract, we now have an option where we once did not.

Whereas since the Cambridge Information Group now owns both WebFeat and Serials Solutions,  ExLibris owns Voyager and ALEPH, etcetera, etcetera, we don’t have as many options…

Long live choice.
